Chapter Eight

The trip to the nobleman’s house had gone perfectly. Sethos’ dream was going to come true, he felt it in his bones. The nobleman had been ecstatic about his wife’s quick healing, thanking Sethos as if he was a savior. The nobleman had easily offered him more money and an estate if he would stay around in case his wife or family needed more healing care. Sethos was more than glad to accept the offer.

Unfortunately, for Aleon this would mean his end. In some ways, it was kind of sad considering he would not be able to torture the thick-headed unicorn while he was living in his new estate. The talisman would get him what he needed though—more unicorns, more creatures, and more healing powers. Finally, he would have a real life away from that cold cavern next to the sea.

Sethos smiled as he pulled his carriage into the small barn he had built himself. The ragged thing was falling apart with the harsh weather living near the ocean. But soon, Sethos would not have to worry about his carriage or taking care of the horses, he would be able to pay people to care for that tedious stuff.

He quickly pulled the horses off the carriage and fed them. He probably should make Aleon do it but his spirits were too high to see that wretched excuse for a unicorn. He headed back into his cave and began a fire. The place was freezing. Sethos sighed knowing he needed to get more firewood for the pathetic man or he would freeze. Maybe he should let him freeze, perhaps that would be a way for the pathetic unicorn to die.

With a sigh, Sethos knew he could not kill off Aleon until he had another unicorn in his possession. Once the fire was up and warming Sethos’ cavern he headed out up to a small storage cove next to the barn and grabbed an armful of firewood. The snow was falling softly and silently again and the wind off the ocean was creating a piercing cold. Sethos carefully balanced the firewood as he opened the wood door to Aleon’s cave. The place was just as cold inside as it was out. Sethos also had a strange sinking feeling when he did not hear Aleon scrambling around the inside with the useless struggle of constantly trying to hide.

“Aleon?” Sethos called.

The stupid unicorn must have burned through his firewood already. When there was no response, Sethos started to think that Aleon had finally kicked the bucket. Sethos walked into the alcove expecting to see a frozen unicorn dead and curled up in the corner but instead he found the room empty. At first, he could not believe his eyes.

How could the unicorn possibly have gotten away?

The unicorn had been forced to eat nightshade making him weaker and he had been tied down with the bones of infants, which had taken at least a year to collect. Sethos was furious by the time he found his steel keys sitting next to the open lock.
